Supporting role for Mayho in California

Clocking in the miles: Mayho has been training hard in preparation for the San Diego Stage Race

Dominique Mayho was scheduled to begin racing with his team, Ride with Rendall, yesterday at the San Dimas Stage Race in California which consists of three stages over three days.

The race begins with a 4.25-mile mountain time-trial up Glendora Mountain Road in the Angeles National Forest.

Today, the riders will compete in a hilly 84-mile road race before concluding tomorrow with a 90-minute criterion in downtown San Dimas.

For the past 2½ weeks Mayho has been at a training camp with his team-mates in Encinitas, California, for more than 25 hours each week, frequently riding more than 100 miles a day.

Joining Mayho this weekend will be team-mates Conor O’Brian, Jordan Cheyne and Trinidadian Gevan Samuel.

Mayho’s role in his team will be a supporting one, helping Cheyne, the top climber in the group, to achieve a strong position.

Meanwhile, collegiate cyclist Gabriella Arnold took her first win for Marian University last weekend at a conference race in Kentucky.

The freshman, majoring in education, led home the field in a crash-marred road race which had been stopped to allow medical treatment for an injured rider.

Working with her well-trained team-mates, Arnold out-sprinted the main competition from Lees-McRae College. The next day Arnold finished sixth in the criterion, riding in support of team-mates who took the top two spots in the technical race.

n The local road racing season continues with a criterion race tomorrow morning in Hamilton.

Organised by Bicycle Works, racing will be around the block that contains the Ace and XL buildings, with the action getting under way at 7.30am with the youngest participant. The A category riders begin at 10.15am.

Mayho and April Galda won the men’s and women’s titles last year.
