Sandys brawlers claim self-defence

Two Sandys men have pleaded guilty to affray after getting into a fight with one another in the early hours of yesterday morning.

One of the men also admitted giving Police a false name at the time of arrest.

Crown counsel Alan Richards said that Police were travelling north on Clyde Best Lane at 2am on Wednesday when they spotted Jevon Daniels, 34, and Jiriko Powell, 21, both of Sandys, “hitting out at each other”.

Police shouted orders for them to stop, but they continued to fight and so were cautioned. Both men told the officer: “I was defending myself.”

When asked his name, Powell told the officer “Antoine Francis”.

They were eventually taken to Hamilton Police Station, where they were detained and processed.

Addressing magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo, Daniels said: “It will not happen again.

“I just got caught up in the emotion. I was defending myself, I’m not the biggest guy.”

Both men were fined $500 for fighting in public, while Powell was fined a further $300 for perverting the course of justice.
