Saluting Bermuda’s hurricane heroes

Harrington Sound students hosted a celebration for BELCO, BTC and Emergency Workers to say thank you for go getting the island back moving again after Hurricane Gonzalo.

Harrington Sound Primary arranged a special thank-you lunch to show our appreciation for all the community workers who helped after the hurricanes. Mrs Bridgewater, our secretary, collected $1 from every child in the school to buy food. We invited the Fire Service, Police Service, Belco and the Regiment. They had to come at different times as they have short lunchtimes and different shifts. Each class made special cards to show their appreciation.

My job was to interview and record information. It was very interesting finding out what each person had to do. Major Dave Curley from the Bermuda Regiment told me that seconds after a storm or hurricane all Regiment soldiers have to be out to get the island back moving again. I learnt that even though they have families they still look out for us and take care of the community. I enjoyed them coming and I hope they will come again next year.

Harrington Sound Primary celebrated all the people who helped our school and the people of Bermuda through hard times after the hurricane. Belco quickly restored emergency cables — they had to clear roads and make sure nobody was electrocuted. The telephone company had to fix towers and lines so that emergency services could contact each other. The police were busy all the time and had to work very long hours.

Today we celebrated all of our helpers by treating them to hot cross buns and sandwiches. It was good to get to know who helped us get back to normal. We want to say a huge thank you and show how much they are appreciated.
