Kamau Leverock has made his first-class debut for Cardiff MCCU in a three-day match against Gloucestershire in Bristol.

The Bermuda seam bowler, who is in his first year of studies at Cardiff Metropolitan University, captured a prized scalp in the first innings on Tuesday when he bowled opener Will Tavaré, the nephew of former England opener Chris Tavaré, in his second spell.

The wicket came at a cost, however, as Tavaré made a team-high 93 before Gloucestershire declared on 377 for six.

Leverock, who came on as first-change, finished with one for 61 from 16 overs and then scored nine runs batting at No 10 as the university side were skittled out for a mere 95.

Gloucestershire, refusing to enforce the follow-on in this preparation match for the start of the LV= County Championship season next week, scored 180 for one in their second innings, as Leverock, taking the new ball, finished wicketless in six overs that yielded 31 runs.

Needing 463 to win, Cardiff MCCU were 59 for two in 19 overs at the close yesterday. Leverock was presented with his university cap at the start of the match.

Meanwhile, the Bermuda Twenty20 team fly to Jamaica this morning for a training camp ahead of their ICC Americas Division One Twenty20 qualifiers next month.

Arnold Manders, the head coach, and Clay Smith, his assistant, will take a 13-strong group for what is expected to be an intensive tour.

Work issues have meant that some players are unavailable and right up until last night the Bermuda Cricket Board was busy finalising the squad.

The lateness of the announcement, with players only informed that they had been selected at a team meeting on Tuesday evening, caused some concerns, although they were largely dealt with at the time.

One player definitely going is OJ Pitcher, who has returned to the national team set-up after a period away.

Bermuda face Canada, Suriname and the United States in Indianapolis in the first week of May. The tournament’s top two teams will qualify for the World Twenty20 qualifiers in July.
