Unlicensed security guard fined $500

Offering to watch over the peace at a social event while no longer holding a valid licence has proven costly for security guard Mark Tankard.

Magistrates’ Court heard that Tankard was taken on as a guard for an event at the Prison Officers Club in Sandys on May 9 last year.

Several others were working with him.

A check by Police showed that while he had held a licence, it had been turned in on April 30, after Tankard resigned from the firm where he had been working.

Tankard apologised, saying he had meant to do a favour for the event organiser and had not understood that he had been operating outside the law.

Crown counsel Takiyah Burgess told the court the maximum fine for acting as a security guard without carrying a valid licence was $2,000.

Magistrate Archibald Warner settled on a $500 fine, or 30 days’ imprisonment.
