Store prepares for Apple Watch launch

Apple Watch: More than two-thirds of Americans say they are not interested in buying one

The new must-have hi-tech watch from Apple could hit Bermuda as early as the summer.

The Apple Watch — unveiled to customers in selected regions around the world on Friday — officially goes on sale on April 24, when delivery begins of devices that have been pre-ordered through the company’s website.

John Narraway, general manager of Apple stockists iClick, said: “At this point, we haven’t got a firm date — but we will definitely be carrying it.

“We’re quite excited — it’s definitely going to be a hot item when it launches here.”

Mr Narraway explained that Bermuda was linked to Apple’s Latin American region, which had not yet been allocated watches, although customers on Friday could try them out at Apple stores in eight countries, including the US, China, Japan and the UK.

But Mr Narraway said there had already been “a tremendous amount of interest” expressed by customers.

He added: “Bermudians love their gadgets and traditionally we have been able to afford them. Bermuda has been open to technology through its affluence. We’re quite quick to grab what’s new and I don’t think this is any different.”

He added that — due to the high level of options and customisations — it was difficult to predict a Bermuda price.

But he said that the entry level would probably be in the $500-$600 range, while the stainless steel and black Sport model — retailing in the US for $549 — would cost upwards of $800 on the Island.

Mr Narraway added: “We have to add duty and shipping, so it’s likely to be as expensive as an iPhone — the $800 to $900 range.”

He said that if a customer wanted one the firm could source the top-of-the-range 18k gold Apple watch, which sells for $17,000 in the US.

Delivery times for online pre-orders have already been pushed back after Apple in New York started taking orders in the early hours of Friday morning.

The most expensive watches will be delayed until June, while all ten versions of the Sport model will also be delayed until June.

Mid-tier models are scheduled for delivery in four to six weeks.

Apple expected around 300,000 online pre-orders in the first 24 hours and around a million to have been snapped up over the weekend.

The firm hopes to sell eight million of the devices in this financial year, generating $4.4 billion in revenue.

The Apple Watch, however, is not expected to outstrip the iPhone, which helped fuel a record quarter of $18 billion profit.

Apple got four million pre-orders for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus during its first 24 hours on sale last September and sold more than 10 million during its first weekend.

Mr Narraway said: “There are a lot of interesting products out there, but Apple works to make things user-friendly and integrate them with their other products.

“It’s hard to quantify numbers, but a lot of people have been asking about how they can go about pre-ordering from us.”
