Island roots: Bermudian DJ Harry “Choppa Dunks” Dunkley has found success touring clubs and festivals around North America with his blend of island and electronic music

Life’s one big party for 23-year-old Harry “Choppa Dunks” Dunkley.

The DJ has found success touring clubs and festivals around North America with a blend of island and electronic music known as tropical bass.

Two weeks ago he was playing at the Winter Music Conference in Miami, Florida — a “huge gathering” of electronic music entertainers and fans.

“There were panels, exhibits, and conferences for people to enjoy, but what I was most excited about were the shows,” he said.

“There were dozens of shows happening from March 23 to 29, all day, every day, and every DJ you could think of was down there. I personally had three shows and was excited to check out some of my peers and support them as well.”

Choppa Dunks, who happens to be the nephew of Premier Michael Dunkley, realised early on he had a talent in music.

He was two when he started playing drums and was “well versed in a number of instruments” by the time he was seven. His passion only got stronger as he got older.

“The whole DJ thing didn’t start happening until later in life, while I was attending Berklee College of Music in Boston,” he said. “But I always knew I’d have a career in music in some capacity.” He’s not sure what his famous uncle thinks of his high-energy mixes, but said his siblings and his parents, Stephen and Kristi Dunkley, enjoy them.

“I doubt anyone would catch my parents at one of these wild club nights, but if I’m playing near New York City or Boston I can definitely count on seeing one of my sisters or brother there.”

The DJ is based primarily in New York City, but said he likes to explore other parts of the US and Canada as much as possible.

“The music scene in New York is very cool,” he said. “I love it out here. There are so many great venues and the opportunity for exposure is like nowhere else. Obviously, I don’t plan on just being a New York City DJ, though.

“I take great joy in travelling and DJing parties for all walks of life.

“New York is a great homebase for me and so far it’s been really great, but I love being away from it as much as I enjoy being there. Not only do I love to travel, but it also makes me appreciate it more to come back.”

Being in the Big Apple it can feel like the world is at your fingertips, he said. The challenge is there are so many other talented artists also trying to be heard “in the loudest room on Earth”.

The best way to stand out is by being true to yourself, said Choppa Dunks.

“As long as I’m doing what I love to do and people can recognise that, I have no doubt that they’ll gravitate towards it and appreciate it.

“There are a slew of DJs, but there aren’t too many doing the style that I do because of my island roots.”

He got into electronic music after falling in love with the sound, as well as the culture. He said he loves anything that makes people move and provokes an emotion.

“I could see very clearly that electronic music gave people such joy and just made them want to dance,” he said. “I don’t know if you’ve ever seen one of these huge festivals where thousands upon thousands of people are just moving in unison, but it’s inspiring.

“I found, early on, that dance music gives people a specific feeling that I really enjoyed giving them.”

The winter season tends to be slow. When the weather warms up, Choppa Dunks is busy several times a week. There’s nothing he would rather be doing than playing gigs in his favourite spots — Miami, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.

“I like to have fun,” the DJ said. “That’s my top priority in life; I just want to enjoy it.

“I’m so blessed and grateful that my line of work allows me to party and enjoy myself on such a consistent basis.

“Whether I’m DJing for an audience, which is the best rush on the planet, or sitting on my laptop and producing a song, which is the most fulfilling and rewarding feeling I can imagine, I’m always getting so much out of what I do.

“Music is obviously my passion, but one thing that I adore about the specific field I’m in is the people. My peers and fellow DJs and performers are such great, inspiring, helpful and friendly people.”
