Man in court for half gram of cannabis

A St George’s man caught with a small amount of cannabis while intoxicated has asked Magistrates’ Court not to leave him with a drug conviction.

Alfred Docouto, 26, of Cut Road apologised for the offence, telling Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo: “I’m a hard working man, very dedicated to my job.”

The court heard Docouoto was stopped by Police for another offence in the early hours of November 29, 2014, on Water Street.

A preliminary search uncovered a plastic twist in his jacket pocket which contained just under half a gram of cannabis. Docouto told officers he didn’t know what it was or how it got there.

“I wasn’t aware that I had it,” he said in court, requesting a conditional discharge. Mr Tokunbo adjourned the matter, ordering a drug report in the interim.
