After nearly 20 years as a social worker Lisa Trott decided a change was as good as a rest.

She travelled to England with her son, Shakari, so he could attend a specialist school for deaf children and while there she embarked on a new career in the law.

Yesterday, the 46-year-old mother-of-two reached the end of a three-year journey to become a lawyer and was called to the Bermuda Bar.

“I am done with studying now,” she said. “It’s been a lot of work and there were times when I really wondered what I was doing.

“But I can honestly say I do not regret it for a second, and I am very excited about working for the Bank of Butterfield as a legal counsel.”

Ms Trott (right) grew up in Paget and attended Victor Scott and Warwick Academy before studying degrees in psychology and social work at York University and Florida, respectively.

She worked in Bermuda as a social worker for 18 years, during which time she worked in the school system, child protection and drug rehabilitation.

“I had done pretty much everything I could do as a social worker, so I was looking for a change,” she said. “Then my son had to go to school in the UK and I had to accompany him initially, so I felt I should take advantage of the opportunity and get another qualification.”

Ms Trott took a GDL conversion course at Bristol College of Professional Studies and then embarked on a Legal Practice Course (LPC) at the same college.

She recently completed her year-long pupillage at the Bank of Butterfield, where she will continue to work as a legal counsel.

Yesterday, she was joined by her mother, Cynthia Woods, her son Shakari and her daughter, Shara, for the official Call to the Bar ceremony that took place at Supreme Court.

“It was a very proud moment for me and I was very happy to have my family with me,” she said.
