Well-known bus driver and entertainer Mark Anderson has raised more than $3,000 to help his goddaughter who is suffering from cancer.

Mr Anderson, who performs as Sybil Barrington, gave Kamala Smith $3,301.52, raised through an end-to-end walk this month to help her and her family as she undergoes treatment.

“I have to laugh at the 52 cents, but it is what it is,” he said. “Every little bit helps. I just want to thank everyone that has contributed and supported me and my goddaughter. It is very much appreciated.”

Ms Smith, a 32-year-old mother, received in 2011 a diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma (LMS), a relatively rare form of cancer that affects smooth muscle and connective tissue.

She said yesterday that the initial diagnosis happened “almost by accident” after doctors removed a fibroid they noticed during an operation.

“When the pathology came back on it, they found that it was a tumour,” she said. “It shocked everyone. I went abroad and had a hysterectomy, and I was free and clear for two years until last January, when it recurred and came back in my spine.”

Since then, Ms Smith has undergone radiation therapy, but every time she returns for testing the cancer seems to re-emerge somewhere else.

“It has been a battle,” she said. “I’m just trying to take it one day at a time, fight as hard as I can and hopefully, with everybody’s help, I can concentrate on fighting. I really don’t want to think about the funds, although I know that it is a problem waiting in the back.”

Ms Smith said she was caught by surprise by the fundraising effort, and knew nothing about it until she returned to the Island the day before the charity walk.

“I was so shocked,” she said. “Although I need the assistance, I never really asked anybody for their help.

“For someone to just know that I need help and just do it out of the kindness of his heart is just amazing. And that’s been everybody for the last 16 months.

“Everybody has been coming and supporting me, and I’m so grateful.”

Mr Anderson said he had hoped to surprise Ms Smith, so was shocked to see her waiting for him at the finishing line.

“I assumed she was still abroad,” he said. “I knew she was coming back but I didn’t know when, so we both had a surprise.”

The event fell short of its fundraising goal but Mr Anderson said the walk was still a success, both in raising money to support Ms Smith’s family and in raising awareness about the impact of cancer.

“Cancer is coming full force,” he said. “I’m healthy today, but I could have cancer tomorrow. We all have to come together, loving and caring for one another.”
