Around the world in one day

International Day proved to be a wonderful way for Warwick Academy students to celebrate the “Ag Show” day that couldn’t take place. The children were asked to come dressed in a national costume, colours of the flags of a country or a shirt that represented a country. The students looked wonderful in their outfits and some were incredibly creative and colourful.

Year 1 to Year 3 students spent the morning visiting different continents (and countries within the continents). They carried their “passport” around and had it stamped to show where they had been. On their travels they popped in to Africa (South Africa), Oceania (New Zealand), North America (Panama and Canada), Asia (Japan) and Antarctica and had lots of fun learning a little about each place and taking part in great activities. In Year 4, Brazil was the focus of their morning, and music played a large part in what was going on as they learned about Samba and made maracas to play whilst they danced.

In Year 5, children focused on Mexico. They learned a little about two ancient civilisations that were located in that part of the world (the Mayan and the Aztec civilisations) and some of the traditions found in Mexico. In Year 6, the first part of the morning was spent doing an “Around the World Quiz” where their knowledge of the world was tested.

After recess our wonderful parent volunteers came in to introduce them to seven countries: France, Italy, Haiti, Germany, England, New Zealand and Kenya. A special Assembly for the Primary students took place in the afternoon and they welcomed Marianne Herbert and Linda Adderley from the charity Feed My Lambs.

They told the children about the charity and all the good work it carries out and we presented them with a cheque for $1,027 from the proceeds of the Grub Day. A very slick assembly started the day for the secondary School and included a variety of dancers, rappers, singers, and Gombeys. Food from around the world was abundant at recess and the attire of both students and staff was an eclectic mix. Finally the day ended off workshops ranging from Scottish and Zouk dancing, to working with a Swedish graphic designer, to roti cooking and boxing. A great day filled with fun, laughter while learning about other cultures and traditions from around the world.
