Exploring the world of science

On Wednesday, April 15, the Warwick Academy Year Eight students displayed their science fair projects that they’ve been working on ever since January to parents, faculty and other students.

In its eighth year, the Warwick Academy Science Fair has been a way for students to express their inquisitive nature, practise presentation skills and a means for a little friendly competition between the students, as well as serving as an inspiration to the students that aspire to be scientists.

“It was interesting,” Y8 student Jack Thorpe commented. “Before, we did not have any opportunities for these kinds of projects, and I learned a lot about mine (the effects of salt on the freezing point of water).”

Holly Wakely agreed with her classmate. “I found that sometimes it was really stressful,” she admitted, “but most of the time it was really fun, because we got to explore the science world on our own, without guidance from the teachers.” The students are judged on their creativity, the scientific methods displayed, the scientific skills used in the experiment and their oral presentation on the day. There are prizes for best presentation on the day, second in form, first in form, and the overall winner.

“I loved presenting to the others,” Daniel Beverly said. “It was really fun to see everyone interested in your ideas and your project.”

“My favourite part was actually doing the experiment,” Jada Rogers-Ingemann revealed.

“I liked figuring it out as we went, and only having ourselves to rely on — no help from the teachers.”

As students wait nervously for the winner of the Fair (to be announced in the school’s assembly in a two weeks), the Science Fair will continue to be a time of inspiration for young scientists, a time for creativity and a time for the phrase “you’re going down” to be heard across the Warwick Academy halls.
