Wells sets his sights on group stages

Target man: Wells (Photo by Nicola Muirhead)

Nahki Wells, the Bermuda captain, wants to make Guatemala “another victim” when the two countries square off in the second round of the World Cup Qualifiers in June.

Bermuda advanced from the first round after an emphatic 8-0 aggregate victory against Bahamas and Wells wants to see Guatemala suffer a similar fate.

“Guatemala stand in front of us and it’s going to be a tough fixture,” Wells said.

“We said all along it was always going to be tough to get to the group stages, but that’s our target and that’s our goal and Guatemala stand in front of us and we are going to have make them another victim and strive to get through that round and play Canada next.”

Bermuda, who are ranked 129 in the world, were the overwhelming favourites against Bahamas who are ranked more than 70 places below them, however, in Guatemala, Bermuda will come up against opponents ranked 39 places above them.

“It’s going to be a tough game playing against completely different opponents to the last,” said Wells, who bagged three goals against Bahamas in the first round of qualifiers, including a brace at the National Sports Centre.

Bermuda will play their second round games against Guatemala on Friday, June 12 and Monday, June 15, the Bermuda Football Association confirmed.

The first leg will be played in Guatemala at 8pm local time (11pm Bermuda), with the return leg three days later at 5pm at the National Stadium.

“I’m looking forward to the next round of World Cup Qualifiers,” said Wells, who scored his fourteenth goal in the Sky Bet Championship this season during Huddersfield’s 4-4 home draw against promotion-chasing Derby County.

“It’s a long ways away, but it will be here before we know it and our preparations for those games begin now. We are looking forward to the matches and the preparations for those games.”
