Markel appoints co-heads for Island office

Appointments: Sign outside Markel’s office in Bermuda

Reinsurance firm Markel has appointed co-heads of their global operation in Bermuda.

Andrew Barnard and Peta White, both managing directors, will jointly run global reinsurance in the Bermuda office.

Mr Barnard leads the international property and retro business and Ms White leads the North American property business.

In addition, Erik Manning, also a managing director, lead alternative markets and developments.

The firm also announced new appointments in the Markel’s Summit office in New Jersey.

Markel Global Reinsurance president and chief underwriting officer Jed Rhoads said: “I am excited to work with this team that includes experienced industry professionals with a wide breadth of knowledge.

“With this strong reinsurance leadership team, we believe that Markel will continue to be well-positioned to successfully compete in today’s global reinsurance marketplace.”

Mr Rhoads will split his time between the Bermuda and New Jersey offices.

The firm also announced that David Kalainoff, the chief underwriting officer of casualty of Markel’s global reinsurance division and president of Markel’s global reinsurance division at Markel Corporation, is to retire at the end of May.
