Plot your grape escape at wine-tasting event

Kevin Rhyno, a local wine expert, will help people to find the perfect wine at tomorrow night’s Uncorked event at BSoA (Photo supplied)

If you’re a wine lover you probably know about some of its many selling points.

It’s claimed that red wine especially, can protect against certain cancers, improve mental health and provide benefits to the heart as well — all when consumed in moderation of course.

Still need a little convincing? Kevin Rhyno might be just the man for that.

He’s hosting Spring 2015 Uncorked, a wine tasting for newbies and experts, at BSoA tomorrow night.

• How did the Spring 2015 Uncorked wine tasting event come about?

So the concept is really about creating a wine event or a wine experience for a lot of people who wouldn’t normally have an opportunity to try it.

Normally you go to these events and they have a handful of different wines available to sample. But when you’re in the trade we have an opportunity to go to tastings that have between 15 and 50 wines.

Unless you’re in the restaurant business or have the ability to travel to certain markets where they have these big tastings that doesn’t often happen, so when [organiser] Cushi Ming and I first started brainstorming we thought wouldn’t it be great to create an event that was accessible to everyone, not just swanky wine drinkers?

So the concept behind Uncorked is to have 14 wines situated on different tables with knowledgable professionals behind them. The plan is you’ll walk up and sample one to three different wines on the table. You can try all of them or just the ones you want to and decide which ones you enjoy best.

• Do you think it’s possible to change someone’s mind about a certain type of wine — or wine in general?

Well, each person will get to sample what we call a vertical of three full body red wines — one that might be a little juicier, one that might be a little more dry and one that might be a little more spicy — so you can taste the difference between them.

There are a lot of people who drink wine, but aren’t really sure if they like wine because they don’t have the access to enough different types. You go to a party or an event and someone hands you a specific wine and if you don’t like that you may opt to go with another drink instead. What people don’t understand or appreciate is every wine has differences.

Every Sauvignon Blanc, even if it’s from the same country like New Zealand, even though it has similarities, it’s still different. You may think you don’t like it, but you’ve only tasted two or three in your life. You really haven’t experienced all the different styles and flavours that it has to offer.

We talk a lot in our culture about ABC, which stands for Anything but Chardonnay. Chardonnay tends to be more oaky and rich whereas Sauvignon Blanc is more crisp and refreshing, but with Chardonnay it’s the world-renowned food wine and one of the most diverse styles of wine.

You can still find one you like because, depending on the country it’s made in and what the wine maker does to it, you can get anything from a rich vanilla-based wine or a tropical fruit Chardonnay from warmer climates, which has no oaky taste to it.

• What do you hope people will take from tomorrow’s event?

One of the main reasons we do this is to show people there are some wines out there at a great value.

We are not here to be snooty about it. We want it so that people not only have accessibility to taste these wines, but can fall in love with them and consume them on a regular basis. All the price points are under $30 retail.

This time as well we are offering a special treat from Bacardi International, which is setting up a cocktail stand and offering a signature drink midpoint through the event. People will also have a chance to pay $5 to pull a cork and win some prizes. Some might just get a small bottle of wine, but some things are larger. We want this to be a fun, engaging experience that focuses on the accessibility of wine.

•How did you personally become interested in wine?

I am originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia, but I spent 15 years in the fine dining restaurant business between Toronto and Montreal. I came to Bermuda five years ago and started working with Burrows Lightbourn Ltd 18 months ago. I really started to get to know more about wine during my time in the restaurant business. Wine was one of the things that made a definite difference when it came to enhancing the dining experience.

Unlike a drink like vodka and soda water, which tastes the same no matter what food you have with it, every single wine influences your food differently.

There are hundreds of wines that you can put with a steak dish, but each one, depending on its flavour and style, affects the taste of what you put into your mouth. It’s also fun, interesting and always an experience when you’re drinking wine.

• What are your personal favourite wines at the moment?

Right now coming into the summer period I like a dry Albariño from Spain because it’s crisp, refreshing and has a nice body to it and meshes extremely well with food.

For a red wine, I like a lovely Carménère from Chile because it’s big, bold, has a great spice to it and goes perfectly with barbecue and it’s going into barbecue season now.

•What are you most looking forward to when it comes to tomorrow night’s event?

You know what? I am really excited to talk to people and want them to find and discover something new.

I love it when I get to see people taste something they didn’t expect they would like, but they do. A lot of people say ‘I’m not into wine, but my friend dragged me here’. Yet out of the 14 wines we have for them there are maybe three or four they definitely like and want to go home and get a bottle of it.

That for me is the most important part of it all.

• Uncorked tickets, $50, are available at the door, online at premierticketsglobal.com or by calling 704-2771. The event starts tomorrow at 6.15pm.
