Man who stole vodka imprisoned

An alcoholic has been sentenced to three months in prison for refusing to observe Drug Treatment Court.

Dimitri Robinson, 37, of Warwick, was ordered to observe Drug Treatment Court after he pleaded guilty to stealing a $20 bottle of Aristocrat vodka from Lindo’s Family Foods in Warwick on January 14 and asked the courts for help with his addiction.

The court heard today that he attended twice, but then told his probation officer he would not go again.

Robinson said that this was because they were trying to make him participate in a residential drug treatment programme and he would not do so because it was his choice to stop drinking.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo agreed with Robinson that only he, himself, could stop drinking and added: “You claimed and purported to plead for help. But you don’t want help — you’re not ready for it.”

He revoked the probation order and sentenced Robinson to three months’ imprisonment.
