Sybil to feature in Mother’s Day show

Sybil Barrington will be making a dramatic return to City Hall just in time for Mother’s Day.

Mark Anderson, the man behind the drama, will be joined by a host of international female impersonators at the Benefit Mother’s Day Show for the Centre Against Abuse (CAA).

“People can expect high-class drama,” Mr Anderson, the self-styled Queen of Bermuda, said. “As impersonators, as men, we compliment women, so why not have it on Mother’s Day?

“It’s significant to have it on Mother’s Day — this is the perfect compliment for any woman out there to celebrate women and glitz and glamour because that is what so many of them offer.”

Mr Anderson will be joined by international impersonators of Cher, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Gladys Knight, Celine Dion, Patti LaBelle and Beyoncé, and audience members will also be treated to some local talent.

Mr Anderson, who has been performing as a female impersonator since the 1980s, said he is holding the show to honour the CAA because its cause is dear to his heart.

He explained that he was a victim of mental and physical abuse as a child and that he is “speaking for every other child out there who is in silence about it and can’t speak about it because they are a victim”.

He added: “This is a very, very serious situation and this is why it is important to have this shelter.”

Mr Anderson walked the length of the Island last September and raised more than $30,000 for the charity, whose shelter was forced to close last year because of financial restraints.

“In one of my statements, I mentioned that I would have preferred to do a show — that’s something I would have loved to have worked on — and here we are, having this show,” Mr Anderson said.

“All the proceeds will go to the CAA and in the event of anyone not being able to make the show, you could still buy a ticket or just make a donation to the CAA.

“Ladies, don’t disappoint me, don’t leave home like the lights blew out, be fabulous — it’s Mother’s Day. Shine.”

Mr Anderson’s last show at City Hall was in 2010 and he said that “this is why we are saying ‘Sybil Returns’ — it’s been five years”.

CAA executive director Laurie Shiell added: “We are so grateful to Mark that he has chosen to bring Sybil back for his first show after five years and we are grateful to receive the full proceeds from the show.

“This will be a fun evening filled with high entertainment and it will be a great night for anyone looking for something entertaining and different to do on Mother’s Day.”

The show will start at 7.30pm at City Hall on Sunday. Regular tickets are $45 and patron tickets $75. They can be purchased from BDAtix.bm or by calling Shannon’s boutique at 292-5349.
