Pembroke man admits police assault

Pre-sentencing reports have been ordered for a Pembroke man who pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer and violently resisting arrest.

Magistrates’ Court heard this morning that at about 7.50pm on Friday, Rikai Outerbridge, 23, was lying in the middle of Washington Street in Pembroke when he was approached by police officers.

Prosecutor Maria Sofianos told the court that Outerbridge shouted “don’t f*****g touch me” and started lashing out at the officers.

Ms Sofianos added that Outerbridge, who appeared intoxicated and had blood on his clothes, then turned around, picked up his shoe and hit one of the officers on the chest with it.

The officers warned him about his behaviour and when he continued to resist, he was wrestled to the ground by several officers, detained and taken to Hamilton Police Station.

Outerbridge was also charged with escaping custody, but pleaded not guilty and the Crown offered no evidence on that count.

In court, Outerbridge apologised for his behaviour, explaining that he had been assaulted before the incident occurred and was also intoxicated.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo ordered a social inquiry report and a drug assessment, and adjourned the matter to June 26 for sentencing.

Mr Tokunbo granted $2,000 bail on the condition that Outerbridge observe Drug Treatment Court.
