Man admits wounding with fireplace poker

Court reports have been ordered for a St George’s man who admitted assaulting another man with a 3ft fireplace poker when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court this morning.

Mark Trott, 49, pleaded guilty to unlawfully wounding Steven Paynter and to having an offensive weapon in his possession in a public place in St George’s.

The court heard that Trott committed the offences in an increased penalty zone, namely Tobacco Bay Beach National Park, on September 15 last year.

Prosecutor Maria Sofianos told the court that the complainant had been meeting friends at the Tobacco Bay beach bar when the defendant began calling to him from his vehicle.

She said Trott then got out of the car and approached the complainant with the fireplace poker and hit him across the head three times, causing an 8cm laceration to his forehead that required hospital treatment.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo ordered a social inquiry report and adjourned the matter to June 24 for sentencing.

Mr Tokunbo granted $3,000 bail on the condition that Trott have no contact with the complainant.
