Pembroke man admits debit card offences

Court reports have been ordered for a Pembroke man who pleaded guilty to a host of deception charges when he appeared in Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard that Yan Infante-Almanzar, 21, dishonestly obtained goods worth more than $1,200 by making false debit cards that he presented as genuine on various dates in January and February.

Infante-Almanzar, from the Dominican Republic, pleaded guilty to eight charges of dishonestly obtaining goods, ranging in value from $49 to $333, from stores and restaurants across the Island.

He also pleaded guilty to one charge of attempting to dishonestly obtain goods worth $399, and a further two charges of making false debit cards.

He admitted two charges of having false instruments, namely a magnetic stripe card reader and a HSBC debit card in his own name that had someone else’s information on the magnetic stripe.

Prosecutor Alan Richards told the court that the magnetic stripe card reader was used to copy other people’s debit card information onto Infante-Almanzar’s own debit card, which he then used to purchase the goods.

At a previous court appearance on February 23, Infante-Almanzar pleaded not guilty to a total of 49 charges but yesterday he changed his plea to guilty on 13 charges and Mr Richards indicated that the Crown would offer no evidence on the other charges.

Co-accused Dariel Reyes-Nunez, who at his last court appearance on April 28 maintained his not guilty plea on ten charges of a similar nature, will reappear for mention on May 19.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo ordered a social inquiry report for Infante-Almanzar and adjourned sentencing to July 2.
