Chewstick artists returning to folk club

Special night: Deidra Lee Bean and Gavin Smith of the Chewstick Foundation. A number of Chewstick performers will appear at the Bermuda Folk Club tomorrow as part of fundraising efforts following the success of a similar link-up between the two organisations last month

Following the success of a link-up between Bermuda Folk Club and Chewstick last month, the two organisations are doing it again tomorrow with a raft of performers from Chewstick taking to the stage at the folk club’s monthly open mic session.

The evening of music will take place at the Spanish Point Boat Club, Pembroke, with doors opening at 7.30pm and music from 8pm.

A spokeswoman for the club said: “Bermuda Folk Club bring you a great evening of entertainment, celebrating all styles of music and featuring guest Chewstick artists, with part proceeds going to support the renovation of the new Chewstick community hub.”

Chewstick, which was formerly located on Elliot Street, Hamilton, is working on its new cultural hub at 81 Front Street. The organisation last month welcomed the offer from the folk club to participate in the open mic night.

“We saw this as a great fit as we have always had the utmost respect for the Folk Club and are grateful for the opportunity to work together for this Saturday’s open mic and look forward to working more closely with them in the future,” said Gavin Smith, Chewstick’s executive director, last month.

Chewstick performers at tomorrow’s event are set to include Deondre, King Infamus, Paulo Curi, Kassandra Gabrielle, Djata, and Propa. The Bermuda Folk Club will also supply a number of performers.

A third link-up between Bermuda Folk Club and Chewstick is planned for June 6.
