Important questions for People’s Campaign

Dear Editor,

Like many Bermudians, I have an opinion regarding the controversy surrounding the airport redevelopment project.

However, I have been disappointed that no outlet that I know of has asked the representatives of the People’s Campaign the following (I think) important questions:

• Why did the People’s Campaign pay for two hours of special programming on ZBM? Is it not concerning that certain political groups can pay for prime-time access on Bermuda’s only evening newscast? And does the People’s Campaign think the matter should be investigated by the Media Council?

• To request a document under Canada’s Access to Information Act, one must be, and I quote,

(a) a Canadian citizen, or

(b) a permanent resident within the meaning of subsection 2(1) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

Who within the People’s Campaign meets the requirements to make such a request? More pointedly, who requested, and then received, the e-mails in question?

• How can the People’s Campaign continue to consider themselves a non-partisan group “of concerned Bermudians” when they have paid representatives of the Opposition running their social media and producing flyers for distribution at protests and other gatherings?

Should they or that individual not at least disclose these interests?

Without an answer to these queries, I cannot take the group seriously in their demands for full transparency and accountability.

Best wishes, Whiting
