Pembroke man convicted of unlawful assault

A Pembroke man has been convicted of unlawful assault, despite saying he was acting in self defence.

Appearing in Magistrates’ Court this morning, Omar Patterson, 32, was found guilty of assaulting Keeron Lewis and doing him bodily harm in a nightclub in Pembroke on October 4 last year.

Delivering his judgement, Magistrate Archibald Warner said that Patterson struck the complainant on the head with a beer bottle.

He said that Patterson admitted to striking the complainant during his trial, but maintained that his actions were in self defence because he had been provoked and that he did not realise he was holding the bottle.

Mr Warner, however, noted that there were inconsistencies in the witness statements and said that he was satisfied that Patterson’s version of events were not true.

After convicting Patterson, Mr Warner ordered a social inquiry report and adjourned the matter to July 8 for sentencing.

Patterson’s bail was extended.
