Expertise: Elle.com fashion editor Danielle Prescod is one of six overseas mentors taking part in the Local Designer Show in July

Life’s too short to wear boring clothes.

That’s the style motto for Elle.com fashion editor, Danielle Prescod.

Over the years she’s built up an impressive resume in the fashion world. Prior to working at Elle, she climbed the ranks at publications Moda Operandi, Teen Vogue and Interview Magazine.

This summer she’ll bring her expertise to the Island as part of the Bermuda Fashion Festival’s Local Designer Show.

“Fashion has always played an important part in my life,” Ms Prescod said. “I wore a uniform for most of my life so I was always looking for ways to express myself.

“It comes easier to me than most but I always am observing more stylish women than myself and attempting to emulate whatever it is that they have.

“I love people that make interesting mixes, whether that be patterns or textures or proportions. I’m never really drawn to the kind of girl that wears all black all of the time. There is a time and place for that look, but I think fashion is fun. Our clothes should make us happy.”

Ms Prescod says her personal style is always changing.

For now, one thing she never messes with is a jumpsuit and a good pair of flats.

“People always assume that you need a heel to be dressy but you don’t,” she said.

Ms Prescod was part of last year’s show as well, invited by Bermudian fashion consultant Shiona Turini.

She said she was “thrilled” to be returning. “I love Bermuda. It’s one of my favourite places,” the fashion editor said. “The scenery is incredible and I’m very much looking forward to this trip.”

Ms Prescod has spent the past few weeks collaborating with designer Meagan Wellman on her M-Sew collection.

The biggest challenge? Narrowing down a time to chat over FaceTime when they’re both on different continents.

“My partnership with Meagan has been great so far,” Ms Prescod said.

“She is great at communication. I even FaceTimed with her on Sunday for her entire fitting.

“Technology has really helped us because she is currently in London and I in New York, so between each of our busy schedules it can sometimes be a challenge to lock down any time. It is great to have her take my suggestions and work on developing her brand.”

Miss Wellman said her favourite part of the mentorship was bonding with her mentor.

“We have similar design taste which is another plus,” she said. “I’m hoping that out of this I can gain a good relationship with my mentor and some of the other designers. I believe this show could also get some exposure for M-Sew, which would be great!”

Miss Wellman said she was excited about the upcoming event.

Right now she’s trying to balance the demands of her day job in retail in the UK along with making the collection. But, overall, she’s managed to stay on top of things.

“I believe it will be all worth it in the end,” she said.

“The collection is sporty and feminine.

“It’s inspired by Bermuda Cup Match, mixing cricket uniforms with some vintage sportswear.”

Hard work is another thing the ladies have in common.

Ms Prescod said she’s always thrown herself into her job, which is a key component to her success.

“Yes, I still have huge goals,” she said.

“I have been very fortunate in my career so far, but I think the ultimate goal is to get to a place in the fashion industry where your opinion is respected and you can voice it honestly.

“One of the biggest things I always take away from my mentors is that you can always be learning and can always be inspired, so don’t ever close your mind off to something because it could mean a huge opportunity.”
