Rider in critical condition after crash

The 50-year-old Southampton man injured when his motorcycle collided with a truck on Middle Road yesterday morning is in a critical condition.

Another rider, injured in a separate collision with the ambulance that was transporting the first victim to hospital, sustained leg injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening.

According to a police spokesman, a truck and a motorcycle collided on Middle Road, near the junction with Industrial Park Road, at about 8am yesterday.

The motorcyclist sustained “serious injuries” and was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment.

The second collision took place when the ambulance collided with an auxiliary cycle — not a rental cycle as initially reported — on Middle Road, near the junction with Lighthouse Road.

Commuters were being diverted along the Railway Trail until about 9.30am, when traffic flow returned to normal after the affected stretch of road was reopened.

Inquiries into these collisions continue and witnesses should contact the main police telephone number 295-0011 as soon as possible.
