Bermuda’s ukulele star woos UK

Striking a chord: Mike Hind

Bermuda’s ukulele maestro Mike Hind is officially “the Bermudian who stole Britain’s heart”.

Mr Hind, also known by his stage name of Uncle Elvis, now graces the front page of a magazine: appropriately enough, Uke — the UK’s only ukulele magazine. He also appeared in the Huddersfield Daily Examiner after stopping by John Smith’s Stadium to collect an official Nahki Wells jersey before performing on the main stage of the Grand Northern Ukulele Festival.

Mr Hind told the outlet: “I came to Huddersfield Town FC because I wanted to show that not just one Bermudian can play in Huddersfield.

“Nahki is a massive icon in Bermuda and everyone is so incredibly proud of him and everything he continues to achieve. He is very well known, a celebrity on the island and he’s done so well. He’s a local boy done good.

“At the recent international Bermuda match, there was a sea of blue and white striped shirts in the stands with Nahki’s name on the back. It was great to see.”

Self-taught, Mr Hind got serious about the ukulele in 2010 and has been performing with the instrument ever since. Appearing on the magazine’s second issue is an “honour”, Mr Hind said, thanking Colin Murdoch Studios for the picture.
