Accused deny $300,000 drug conspiracy

A man and a woman accused of importing and possessing more than $300,000 worth of drugs were given bail when they appeared in Magistrates’ Court this morning.

Precious Cooper, 19, and Shomari Virgil, 34, both of Hamilton Parish, allegedly imported 3,380 grammes of cannabis and 492.7 grammes of crack cocaine into Bermuda in St George’s on January 6.

The pair were also charged with possessing the drugs with intent to supply on the same date.

Neither defendant had to enter a plea because the charges are indictable and must be heard in Supreme Court.

Prosecutor Nicole Smith told the court that the cannabis had a street value of $169,050 and the crack cocaine was worth $154,050.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo granted each defendant $25,000 bail with a like surety on the condition that they surrender all travel documents, not leave the jurisdiction without the court’s permission and report to police three times a week. The matter was adjourned to June 16 for mention.
