St George’s cruise into semi-finals

Took charge: Simmons

St George’s clinched group D with an emphatic eight-wicket victory over Somerset Bridge in a lopsided First Division Twenty20 affair at Wellington Oval.

Caleb Jean-Pierre and Nzar Paynter claimed three wickets each as the visiting side were restricted to 108 for eight in their allotted overs.

St George’s reached their target with six overs to spare, with Charles Marshall Jr and Macai Simmons putting on 89 for the third wicket.

The home side’s decision to send Bridge into bat paid dividends, with the visiting side in early trouble at 36 for three as left-arm seam bowler Jean-Pierre picked up two wickets in his first spell.

A 34 run fourth-wicket stand between Clarence Trott and Donnie Charles halted the slide, however, another collapse had four additional wickets tumble for 22 runs, including two in the last over.

Charles led the Bridge batting with an aggressive and unbeaten 52 from 50 balls, that contained nine boundaries, while Eziel Greenwood, who made 15, and Sean Riley, who added 11, were the only other Bridge batsmen to reach double figures.

Nzar Paynter, the off spinner, took three for 11 and Jean Pierre three for 13.

St George’s made a shaky start to their run chase, losing openers Chae Foggo and Damon Walker in the space of two overs as seam bowler Kevin Vickers made the most of the new ball.

However, after that Marshall and Simmons took charge.

Simmons finished with an unbeaten 43 from 23 balls, while Marshall added 38 from 36 balls.

Despite losing, Bridge advanced to the semi-finals along with St George’s because of the withdrawal of Warwick.
