City could cash in from Parade

Money maker?: The Corporation of Hamilton could charge to reserve a viewing spot for the popular Bermuda Day Parade (above), a reader suggests (Photo by Nicola Muirhead)

Dear Sir,

As people gathered to claim their reserved spots to watch the Bermuda Day Parade, I couldn’t help but wonder why a name on the kerb was so frowned upon.

So long as all markers are removed after, what’s the harm?

More to the point, why doesn’t the Corporation of Hamilton collect a nominal fee for the privilege?

Allocating 10ft sections at $x each would generate funds they wouldn’t have otherwise. Of course, some degree of planning and regulation would be in order, such as leaving space in certain spots exclusively for the public.

As it is now, public space is virtually nonexistent.

Full access to the public for the entire length of Front Street is a good starting point.

I see, too, a viewing scaffold by No 6 shed which might be a future trend to consider.

Sincerely, CK Simons
