Fashion ‘a tool to exhibit my creativity’

Matthew Henson, the fashion editor for New York's Complex Magazine, will be on Island taking part in the Bermuda Fashion Festival

Matthew Henson may be the fashion editor for Complex magazine, but his career motto is actually quite simple — you get out what you put into it.

“The biggest lesson that I’ve learnt is there’s no replacement for hard and honest work,” he said. “Your effort will determine your success.”

Mr Henson not only works at the New York-based publication, he’s also a freelance stylist and brand consultant. He’s styled fashion spreads for i-D Magazine and The Wall Street Journal, and served as a consultant for up-and-coming brands En Noir and Bazar-14.

The trendsetter will be on Island in July for the Bermuda Fashion Festival’s Local Designer Showcase.

He participated in the scheme last year when he was paired with Nahlijah Williams, for her collection, Randoms Vintage Vibes. This year he won’t mentor anyone but he’s excited to offer support where needed.

“We had a great time, and I got to know [Nahlijah] so well, so I am excited to do it once again,” he said.

“I find Bermuda to be one of the hidden gems of the world. It’s the most magnificent island that I’ve ever been to. The people are warm, the food is delicious and the sand is pink. What more could you ask for?” Fashion has always meant a lot to him.

“It’s always been an important part of my life, in my personal expression, and a tool to exhibit my creativity,” he said. “Style was something that was embedded in me from a young age. My parents are extremely well-dressed and presentable people.

“I wouldn’t say I have so many inspirations when it comes to my personal style.

“I dress however I feel in the morning. I’ve been collecting clothes from my favourite designers for years, so I have a lot to work with. You can tell from my outfit how I feel that day.”

When asked, he said he didn’t have a signature outfit, however, one of his favourite things to throw on is a pair of black jeans and a black T-shirt.

Although he’s accomplished quite a bit in his career so far, he’s looking forward to doing more.

“I still feel like I am just starting to make a name for myself. The best is yet to come.”
