Pair accused of attempted murder discharged

A man and woman accused of attempted murder will not stand trial.

Both defendants have been discharged after appearing in Magistrates’ Court.

Keitha Richardson, 31, of Paget, and Damon Morris, 26, of Pembroke, were charged on January 26 with attempting to kill Earlston Bailey Smith in Paget on September 17, 2010. They were also charged with using a firearm to commit an indictable offence and shooting Mr Smith with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Mr Smith died a month later in an unrelated road accident.

Mr Morris was also charged with possessing a firearm and ammunition on the same date as the shooting.

The pair were not required to enter pleas at the time because the charges were indictable and had to be heard in the Supreme Court.

The case against Ms Richardson, who was represented by lawyer Vaughan Caines, was discharged during a preliminary hearing on May 20.

Mr Morris, represented by Charles Richardson, was discharged yesterday by Magistrate Archibald Warner.

Discharging both defendants, Mr Warner said that there was insufficient evidence against them to make them stand trial.

A third accused, Alanson Winfield Trott, 27, was also charged on January 26 with the offences, but he did not appear in court and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Prosecutors are still seeking to proceed against Mr Trott, who is believed to be in the United Kingdom.
