Bascome set for Dockyard bout

Ring return: Bascome, left, defeated Marchand-Tipping in his last bout in November

Nikki Bascome, the Bermuda boxer, will look to extend his undefeated professional record when he returns to the ring to face an unknown opponent at the Victualling Yard in Dockyard next month.

The orthodox welterweight, whose record stands at 2-0, will face a Florida-based boxer in a four-round outdoor bout that will headline a fight card to take place on July 11.

Allen “Forty” Rego, Bascome’s trainer, said: “Right now I don’t have anything on the guy other than he is coming from Florida. I don’t know who he is as of yet, I just know that the fight is on.”

It will be Bascome’s first bout since his unanimous points victory against Canadian Joe Marchand-Tipping on the undercard of Teresa Perozzi’s IBA world middleweight title fight at the Fairmont Southampton Hotel in November.

“Nikki is excited about fighting at home and I think it’s going to be a good fight,” Rego added. “It’s going to be a good event. People are going to see a lot of good fighters and I think it’s in a great place.”

Rego and Bascome are scheduled to travel to Orlando this month to step up preparations for the bout.

“Nikki and I will be leaving on the June 21 to go to Orlando to train and will be coming back July 9,” Rego said. “Nikki is training well and everything is going pretty good.

“Nikki never stops training, he’s like Mayweather, he never leaves the gym. On Sunday he was really, really sharp. We trained on the beach and he will be back out tonight.”

It is understood that the promoters of Teachers Rugby Fight Night were keen to have Bascome headline their event at Berkeley Institute in April. The bout never materialised, however, forcing Bascome to seek competition elsewhere.

Bascome achieved a points victory against American George Quintero in Florida on his professional debut in 2013.

Before turning professional, he won several honours competing in the junior-middleweight division, including the Dynamic Fighting Championship, the Platinum Gloves Tournament and the Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic.
