BAR back for third go around the Sound

Ben Ainslie Racing team members foiling in the Great Sound

Ben Ainslie Racing return to Bermuda this week for a third training camp in six months.

The British challenger for the 35th America’s Cup were the first team to scout the Great Sound, the venue for the next “Auld Mug”, back in January.

BAR returned two months later to take further advantage of the more suitable conditions in the winter months, sailing in the team’s two 20ft foiling catamarans in Dockyard.

David “Freddie” Carr, a new member of BAR, said they could hardly wait to get reacquainted with the conditions in the Great Sound.

“We are all really looking forward to getting back out to Bermuda and picking up where we left off in March,” he said.

“We have learnt so much from each visit, about the intricacies of the course and the conditions. We know it’s a tight racetrack and there’s going to be a lot of manoeuvring. There’s a lot to get our heads around.

“The training camps are invaluable and we will have another solid programme of testing.

“We were recording some good speeds during the last trip so it’s all about getting back out there and putting our energy into sailing as best we can.”

Bermuda will host all America’s Cup racing in 2017, including the America’s Cup Qualifiers, Challenger Series and Final Match.

“The atmosphere in anticipation of the America’s Cup in Bermuda is incredible,” Nick Hutton, the BAR bowman and Argo Group Gold Cup winner, said. “Everyone is already really excited and the people on the Island are really warm and friendly. It’s great to see so much support.”

BAR are led Sir Ben Ainslie, the team principal and skipper, who won the America’s Cup as a tactician with Oracle Team USA, the defender, in 2013.

Ainslie, the most decorated sailor in Olympic history, is also a two-times Gold Cup winner having won back-to-back titles in Bermuda in 2009 and 2010.
