Fan favourite Lambe vows to work on his finishing

Plenty more to come: Lambe had a solid first season for Mansfield in League Two

Reggie Lambe has vowed to bulk up Mansfield Town’s goal threat from midfield after signing a new one-year deal at the Sky Bet League Two side.

The 24-year-old scored five goals in 34 appearances during a promising first season at the One Call Stadium, but feels there is still plenty of improvement left in his game.

Lambe, a flying winger, knows he needs to make more of a contribution to the scoring department if he is to become one of the division’s standout performers.

“Last season was good for me and I came in and did what the manager [Adam Murray] wanted,” Lambe said.

“I contributed with a few goals and I’m looking forward to doing the same and a bit more next season. People notice goalscorers and if I keep working on my finishing I know I will get better.”

Lambe’s ability to go past defenders and propensity for hard work have endeared him to the Mansfield supporters, who watched their side struggle for much of the season.

The team finished 21st in the table, seven points above the relegation zone, although Lambe believes they have more quality than their lowly finish suggests and could be play-off outsiders next season.

“I’m happy to stay at Mansfield and the fans have really taken to me and are behind me,” said the former Toronto FC player.

“They tweet me after the games and it’s really good to know I have their support.

“Hopefully we can do well like we did towards the end of the season and move up and maybe reach the play-offs.”

With Bermuda in the midst of a World Cup qualifying campaign, Lambe’s return home has not been as restful as he might have hoped.

He expects to be in action in the friendly against Puerto Rico at the National Stadium on Friday before heading to Guatemala for the first leg of Bermuda’s second-round tie.

“I’ve tried to get some rest because I had a very long season, going straight to England to play after leaving Toronto,” Lambe said.

“I’ve been training with the national team while also trying to relax a bit. It’s been quite difficult to manage, but I think I’ve done okay.

“The team’s coming together well and it’s important for the starting line-up to get some minutes under our belt on Friday.”

Lambe was just 17 when Bermuda last faced Puerto Rico in two friendly matches at the National Stadium in 2008 under then-manager Keith Tucker.

Bermuda, who were preparing for the 2010 World Cup qualifiers, lost the first game 2-0 and the second 1-0.

“Hopefully we can do a better this time around,” Lambe said. “I’m looking forward to facing them again.”
