Cueto: Game will not be all friendly

Mark Cueto, the Sale Sharks wing, will wind down his illustrious career when he plays for the Bermuda Barbarians against Harlequins in the Atlantic Cup at North Field tomorrow.

The all-time leading try scorer in the Aviva Premiership, who announced his retirement in January, will join forces with the Barbarians, managed by former Lions hooker Lee Mears.

Harlequins have spent the week visiting schools and raising money for Bermuda’s Beyond Rugby charity, which works with at-risk children to provide mentorship and life skills.

Cueto, 35, is back in Bermuda for the second year, although he was ruled out of last year’s game between Barbarians and Saracens because of injury.

“To get the invite again was something I was really pleased about,” said Cueto, who made his England debut in 2004, claiming 20 tries in 55 games.

“The last couple of months have been pretty busy, getting stuff done and finishing [the season], but it’s been great to be out here for a few days and enjoy the island.”

Cueto, who still plans on playing charity and exhibition games as he closes the curtain on his fifteen-year career, said the mentality of tomorrow’s game will be less aggressive than normal, but fans should still expect quality rugby from some world-class players.

“You need to go into it with the right sort of mentality to not get injuries, stuff like that,” he said.

“There will be areas of the game that won’t be hugely competitive that would be normally, but generally there’s still going to be some good tackles in there, some good hits as well. It should be good fun.”

The Cumbrian native will continue to be involved with rugby, taking on an ambassador’s role with Sharks, the club he spent his entire career with.

“Last year was my first invite over here, and I had an absolutely brilliant time and the week went really well,” Cueto said. “Fingers crossed I’ll be back a few more times as well.”

Tomorrow’s match starts at 7pm.
