A former ice cream parlour had reopened with a new name and new owners.

Front Street’s Double Dip is now called Honey’s Cafe and Creamery and owned by near-neighbours Supermart.

Supermart president Tredwick Gorham said the opportunity to scoop up a share of the market for ice cream, drinks and snacks was too good to miss.

He added: “There is a synergy between the two businesses with customers coming by, especially on the weekends and in the evenings.”

Mr Gorham said the business had been closed up for some time and the landlord had been looking for a new tenant.

He added: “He called us up and we took it on. We reviewed it and opened it up.”

The new cafe-style ice cream parlour offers a range of foods, smoothies and home-made cones that customers can take out or relax with on the patio.

Mr Gorham said: “We’ve already got a lot of people coming in now and summertime is ice cream time and that’s just kicking in now.”

He added: “The ice cream is made locally by the same guy who used to make it for the previous occupants.”

And he said the store had now started its summer hours, which will also help them capitalise on the regular Harbour Nights held in Hamilton over the tourist season.

The shop is run by Basil Outerbridge, Jeanann Bassett and Shannin Tannock.

Honey’s offers a range of 24 flavours which can be blended into milk shakes, ice cream sundaes or the cafe’s signature Honeypot — a choice of six scoops of ice cream in a freshly-made waffle bowl, topped with a selection of four sauces, whipped cream and a cherry.

The smoothies are made with 100 per cent real fruit and vegetables, while pastries, pies, sandwiches, baked potatoes, pizza and popcorn are also on offer.

Mr Gorham said: “We’re sure people are going to like it and it’s a valuable addition to what’s on offer on Front Street, both for locals and tourists.”

Honey’s is open from 11am-7pm on Sundays to Tuesdays and 11am to 10pm between Wednesdays and Saturdays.
