Cutler equals best finish

Alec Cutler and crew of Hedgehog finished sixth at the third stage of the 2015 Audi-Tron Sailing Series in Italy at the weekend

Alec Cutler equalled his best showing in the 2015 Audi-Tron Sailing Series competing in Riva Del Garda, Italy at the weekend.

The Royal Bermuda Yacht Club skipper and crew aboard the Melges 32 Hedgehog placed an impressive sixth among the 21-boat fleet to equal the team’s showing at the previous event held in Porto Venere, Italy last month.

Cutler and crew posted three top three finishes in the eight race series, including a bullet in the fourth race, which proved to be the highlight of the regatta for the Bermuda registered team.

The past J-22 world champion once again competed with an experienced crew that included Mike Wolfs, the Olympic medal-winner and Melges 24 world champion. Chris Rast, of Switzerland, served as the team’s tactician.

Roberto Tomasini Grinover and crew of Robertissima won the regatta, finishing ten-points clear of nearest boat Delta, helmed by skipper Dalton DeVos.

Tomasini Grinover clinched the title with a bang, scoring a bullet in the final race after starting the final day of sailing level on points with DeVos, the youngest skipper in the fleet.

DeVos’s bid for a second win on this year’s Audi-Tron Sailing Series went up in smoke after crossing the line 17th in the last race, leaving him to settle for second place for a second straight regatta.

Third went to day one leader Jason Carroll, the Melges 32 world champion, and crew in Argo.

Sailing with Carroll was Cameron Appleton, the America’s Cup winner and European, US National and Melges 32 world champion, who served as tactician on Cutler’s Hedgehog at last month’s event in Porto Venere, Italy. Cutler and Appleton also competed against each other at the 2005 King Edward VII Gold Cup in Hamilton Harbour.

Also competing in Italy this weekend was Francesco Bruni, the 2013 Argo Group Gold Cup winner and America’s Cup sailor, as tactician aboard Alessandro Rombelli’s boat, Stig.

On the eve of the regatta Italian Bruni was in Bermuda sailing with Artemis Racing, Swedish challenger of the 35th America’s Cup.
