Showboating: Lindsay-Hague gets Harlequins going forward again at the National Sports Centre

Ugo Monye, the former England and Lions wing, signed his career off in style with a try and two conversions in Harlequins’ 68-43 rout of the Bermuda Barbarians on Saturday.

Monye, who retired at the end of the season, helped the Aviva Premiership side win the Atlantic Cup against a Barbarians side with a few stars of their own in former England players Mark Cueto and Andy Goode.

In front of an enthusiastic and good-natured North Field crowd, the match was played in a friendly spirit, with Harlequins’ extra quality and younger legs ultimately proving the difference.

Monye, who scored a try for the Lions against South Africa in the third Test win at Ellis Park, Johannesburg, in 2009, said he could not have hoped for a better way to finish his final season in the game.

“It was a bit of a swansong for me today,” said Monye, who came through the Harlequins Academy and played more than 230 games for the London club.

“It’s raining back home and I’ve been out here in 30 degrees, having a few beers and playing some rugby. It’s been a lot of fun.

“It was a bit of an exhibition game and there were quite a few gentleman’s agreements out there.”

The powerful and pacy wing, who scored two tries in 14 appearances for England, was afforded the opportunity to kick his first conversions for Harlequins, where he spent the whole of his 13-year career.

“They were my first conversions for Harlequins, for sure,” said Monye, whose team’s try scorers included full back Oliver Lindsay-Hague and wing Tom Williams.

“I just thought, ‘if not now then when?’. I really enjoyed them. It was probably a reflection of the way the game was played tonight.”

Monye, who made his debut for Harlequins in 2002, helping the club to four trophies — the European Challenge Cup in 2004 and 2011, the LV= Cup in 2013 and the Aviva Premiership in 2012, said he had mixed emotions about hanging up his boots. He will not be out of the game for long, though, with the 31-year-old joining BT Sport as part of their rugby coverage team.

“I’m excited about retiring, but equally Harlequins have been my family for the past 13 years and I’m going to miss them,” Monye said.

“They are an unbelievable group of people. I’ve been able to wear one of the best jerseys in the world and I love Harlequins. I will miss them, but I’m moving on to the next chapter of my life.”

The Harlequins fundraising week has seen the team visit schools and run coaching workshops in an effort to raise the profile of the sport on the island, as well as funds for the Beyond Rugby Programme.

“It was good fun and I guess that was the whole point of us coming really, raise a bit of awareness and put on a bit of a spectacle,” Monye said.

“I think the crowd enjoyed themselves because they saw us enjoying ourselves. There were about 15 or 20 tries out there!

“It’s been outstanding and Bermuda is an unbelievable place. I can’t wait to come back, it’s been a quality week.”
