Lewis part of team’s bright future

Happy feet: Lewis, who impressed in the midfield for Bermuda, bursts past Puerto Rico defender Joan Morales

Zeiko Lewis is rapidly becoming one of Bermuda’s brightest young players after another eye-catching display in his team’s friendly against Puerto Rico.

The attacking midfielder added some much needed sparkle to an otherwise mediocre performance with his mazy dribbles, quick feet and impressive array of passing.

Twice he threaded defence-splitting through balls that almost led to goals, with Damon Ming missing a good one-on-one chance and Angelo Simmons firing wide from a tight angle.

Lewis, however, was still not satisfied with his exciting showing and said he was disappointed with the amount of times he lost possession.

“When the rest of my team is making good runs it’s hard not to be [creative],” said Lewis, who attends Boston College.

“Whenever I see a pass I always try to make it. I always try to be one or two steps ahead of everyone else.

“I’m just going to try and work on my game because I felt I lost possession too many times and I’m disappointed about that.

“I was also disappointed that I couldn’t help my team with a goal.”

The 20-year-old was deployed in a more central position in Friday’s friendly at the National Stadium, but said he is more than happy to fulfil any role coach Andrew Bascome asks of him.

“The coach likes us to mix it around and I don’t mind playing out wide or in the middle,” he said.

“If I’m out wide I like being one-on-one with a defender, but when I’m inside I try to keep things a bit more simple.”

Lewis is confident Bermuda can improve upon their 1-1 draw against Puerto Rico and find peak form when they face Guatemala in the first leg of their second-round World Cup qualifiers on Friday.

“I think we played all right [against Puerto Rico], but we have a lot more to offer,” said Lewis, who plays for First Division side Young Men’s Social Club.

“We really wanted the victory, especially after our 3-0 loss to Mexico Under-23s.

“We have to put this behind us and get ready for Guatemala, that’s the goal.

“We’ve had plenty of training sessions and a few friendly matches, so hopefully we can hit our peak against Guatemala.”

Bascome believes Lewis is starting to become an impact player for Bermuda and said his dedication and attitude towards training had been impeccable.

“Zeiko is a fantastic player and he’s always early to training and never gives the coach any fuss,” Bascome said.

“He always trains hard and is getting better and better.”
