Help our elders to enjoy nature reserve

Natural beauty: The Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve in St David’s boasts beautiful beaches, but they aren’t easy to access, a reader says (File photo by David Skinner)

Dear Sir,

Not long ago I decided to take a 99-year-old family member to Cooper’s Island. Horseshoe Bay is very popular with full buses of tourists arriving from Dockyard.

Clearwater Beach is lovely but it is not as easy to enter the water as it is at Cooper’s Island, Long Bay. This is an absolutely beautiful location (beaches and nature reserve).

Bermudians and tourists can visit the area by squeezing through the iron gates and walking several hundred yards to reach the beaches.

So how do you get a 99-year-old woman to the beaches? She loves to swim and can still walk, but not that distance.

I called the Ministry of Environment to get permission for entry with a vehicle.

I parked the car and within minutes an officer (from the Ministry of Environment) took our licence number and informed us we were not allowed to be there.

We are asked to leave as soon as our senior had a dip in the sea. We were informed that this was a conservation area, not a recreation beach.

Our elders need to enjoy our Bermuda. All Bermudians should be allowed to enjoy this beautiful area peacefully.

There should be one day a week when seniors are allowed to enter Cooper’s Island. Have a shuttle for them to avoid cars in the nature reserve.
