Government must connect with the people

Jason Hayward (File photo)

Dear Editor,

In my last letter to you (When will OBA’s focus return to the people?, April 9), I ended by stating: I have heard cries from public sector workers, cries from private sector businesses and employees, cries from the Opposition, cries from the unemployed, and cries from our seniors.

It seems as though the whole country is crying out. One Bermuda Alliance, are you listening?

Well it seems as though now our charities and even an OBA MP are crying out.

Why is there a perception that there is a disconnect between the people and the Government, or is it a reality?

Whichever is determined to be true, here are some suggestions on how the Government can begin to close that gap:

• Work to implement the National Training Plan;

• Commit to comprehensive immigration reform;

• Work to make healthcare affordable;

• Invest in the education of our people;

• Develop a National Strategic Plan and disseminate copies to the public;

• Make full employment of Bermudians a national priority; and

• Consult all relevant stakeholders before making critical decisions.

I believe that sufficient movement in these areas will help the Government to improve their relationship with the people of Bermuda.
