Corday puts Cuts to the sword

Justin Corday was in fine form for Somerset with a half-century

Justin Corday produced a fine all-round display to inspire Somerset to an emphatic 145-run victory over Willow Cuts in the Logic Premier League West End derby at Somerset Cricket Club on Sunday.

Corday blasted a half-century and then claimed two wickets with his leg breaks to cap an impressive outing with both bat and ball.

He arrived at the crease in the 26th over with Somerset reeling at 137 for eight and turned the match on its head with an aggressive knock of 63 from 73 balls.

The No 10 batsman put Cuts to the sword, thumping eight fours and two sixes and reached his half-century off 53 balls.

Along with Marcus Johnson, Corday added 82 runs for the tenth wicket before he was the last wicket to fall to end the innings.

Corday’s whirlwind knock virtually batted Cuts out of the match and overshadowed some fine bowling by Cuts’ left-arm spinner Kavon Fubler who claimed five for 48 that included a maiden-wicket over.

Others making significant contributions to Somerset’s total were Greg Maybury, who smashed 35 and Jekon Edness, the Somerset captain, who hit 25.

Somerset were comfortably poised at 72 for three at one stage but suffered a slide, with five wickets falling for 65 runs with Fubler inflicting the heaviest damage with the ball. But thanks to Corday’s late fireworks, Somerset’s tail wagged and frustrated a Cuts side missing key players Kamal Bashir and Deunte Darrell through suspension.

Sheroy Fubler, who took two for 52, was the only other Cuts bowler taking more than one wicket.

In reply, Cuts found themselves in early trouble at 26 for four after Maybury made early inroads with the new ball. But a 45-run fifth-wicket stand between Kavon Fubler and Joseph Basden halted the slide.

Fubler dominated the 14-over partnership, stroking three fours in a knock of 25 from 39 balls. The partnership was eventually broken when Fubler played across the line of a Corday delivery that clattered the batsman’s stumps.

Fubler’s dismissal signalled the end of Cuts’ resistance as the visiting side’s last five wickets tumbled for 20 runs.

Joshua Gilbert, the off spinner, led the Somerset attack with three for 13.
