Are all those honoured lauded equally?

National Hero: Dame Lois Browne-Evans (File photo)

Dear Sir,

We have now had two new inductees added to our illustrious list of national heroes, this most fitting as we honour those we deem worthy on the national stage.

I do, however, pose the question: are all of our heroes created equal for honour and recognition in the daily life of our country?

Dame Lois Browne-Evans has a prominent building in the city replete with a life-size sculpture named in her honour and national hero designation. This is good but why the disparity with the others in that select group?

We have honoured several people of varying contributions in education, sport, labour advocates and others as we see fit. Schools now bear the names of some of our outstanding educators for posterity. This is most appropriate.

In recent times we have seen the renaming of a park and even a school for what we now think is more relevant for esteem and dedication.

Now let me make the point of heroes not being created equal, we name the airport after the late LF Wade, who, by the way, is not among the national heroes group.

It is not my intention to disrespect Mr Wade at all but to simply point out that our airport is named after a former leader of the Opposition Party who never led the country.

In other jurisdictions such an honour is reserved for leaders at the top tier of distinction in the naming of an international airport!

Could we not rename Parliament Street after Sir Henry Tucker for his contribution to the political life and advancement of Bermuda? We have Front Street and Church Street along with others that could bear the names of other national heroes as well.

What about some well-placed head-and-shoulders sculptures in the likenesses of our heroes atop pedestals placed in the city and in the East End and West End.

If we are serious about celebrating our national heroes, they should have equal prominence in historical posterity. (The committee that is responsible for creating the list of heroes shoould, in my humble view, deliberate on this, if this hasn’t already been done.)

Further, there should be no partisan or racial consideration only the value of proven commitment to the country by these very special people.
