A woman was discharged from hospital after being injured in the Hamilton bus terminal yesterday when a parked and unoccupied bus rolled out of its bay and ploughed into the front of a Washington Street business.

The 36-year-old Pembroke woman was treated for minor injuries, according to Police.

The incident, at about 1.30pm, is being investigated by the Department of Public Transportation in tandem with Police.

“I was frozen scared, thinking that someone was going to get hit,” said 15-year-old Ava Mayer, who had been waiting to board a bus home.

“The bus arrived a bit early and the driver got out and closed the door to go to the office, and it started rolling back.

“There was nothing we could do about it — there was a big commotion and one of the tourists ran after it and tried to get hold of it and stop it somehow. It was lucky only one person was hurt.”

The bus struck the Le Chic hair salon in the Russell Eve building, smashing in windows and causing “superficial injuries” to a female bystander, according to a Police spokesman. He added that the woman had been taken to the hospital as a matter of caution.

The incident was similar to an accident in 2012, when an empty parked bus slipped its brakes and rolled into Audio Visual Electronics Ltd on the same stretch of road.
