Frustration over erratic mail service

Talks are said to be continuing over cuts that have led to irregular deliveries of the post in Paget, where the sub-post office was recently closed down.

A Post Office spokeswoman said staffing overall had been cut by 35 per cent over the past few years, forcing the service to function with “significantly reduced resources”.

However, she said the public should notice improved deliveries in Paget “over the next few weeks” as the service works through the transition.

The erratic service in the district has prompted complaints to The Royal Gazette in recent weeks, with one resident saying it had dropped from “at least once a week” to about twice in the past six weeks.

She said she had been inconvenienced by receiving all of her credit card statements late, but had been informed that the problems were being discussed with union representatives. The Island’s postal service has been under a directive to streamline its operations in recent years as it has consistently lost money.

“Efficiency now demands that we move staff around to effectively maintain service levels in spite of the reduced number of staff,” the spokeswoman said.

“However, historic agreements create constraints on our ability to shift delivery post persons to different routes or offices, based on the needs of the Bermuda Post Office.

“As a result, some areas have experienced irregular service while we work through the process of getting buy-in from all stakeholders on the necessity of doing more with less, being more flexible and, where necessary, training staff on different routes.

“Paget is one parish where we are working through this transition and it is our goal to return to a more sustainable, regular delivery pattern as soon as possible.”
