International accreditation for high school

The Bermuda High School has received international accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

The credential is the second received by the school, which was accredited by the Council of International Schools last fall.

NEASC member schools include many prestigious American institutions, such as Phillips Exeter Academy, The Hotchkiss School, Ethel Walker, Deerfield Academy, St Andrew’s School and Miss Porter’s School.

A BHS spokeswoman said the association found that the school had “achieved high standards of professional performance and is committed to continuing improvement”.

“In the words of the NEASC, it provides ‘an objective verification of quality’,” the spokeswoman said.

“In his letter announcing the grant of the accreditation, director of the overseas accrediting arm of the NEASC, Peter Mott, referred to a broad spectrum of notable school qualities, ranging from effective governance and leadership to school climate, student behaviour, co-curricular activities, financial acumen and facilities.

“In the final report, specific strengths highlighted included the teachers’ ongoing nurturing of their students, the students’ impressive demeanour, the school’s celebration of student effort and success, the school’s active role in supporting many community initiatives, and the effective programmes and activities which complement the formal curriculum in support of the BHS guiding statements.”

Head of School Linda Parker said: “Our mission is to educate our students to the highest international standards and to foster confident, responsible global citizens.

“I am delighted to receive this accreditation, the second in the space of a few months, which confirms the high quality of the educational experience provided at BHS.”

Chairwoman of the board of trustees, Mariette Savoie, added that the leadership team should be commended, and it was gratifying to see the school’s efforts endorsed.
