BHB hires second oncologist

New BHB oncologist Christopher Fosker

The Bermuda Hospitals Board has appointed Christopher Fosker as its second oncologist.

Dr Fosker, the husband of a Bermudian, is qualified to treat cancer patients with radiation therapy, chemotherapy and molecular therapy, and will work closely with Bermuda Cancer and Health when it starts to offer radiation treatment on the Island.

According to a BHB spokesman, Dr Fosker had been working at the St James Institute of Oncology in Leeds, England, since 2008. In addition to his clinical work, he has worked for the Macmillan Cancer Charity as a policy adviser and for NHS England as a clinical adviser.

He is also the recipient of a number of awards including the “RS Bush Award” for academic excellence from Princess Margaret Hospital in 2012, and the “Healthcare team of the year award” from the Yorkshire Post Health Awards 2014 as part of the Leeds’s Head and Neck Cancer team.

Chief of staff Michael Weitekamp said the BHB is pleased to have Dr Fosker join the team, especially because he will be able to assist with local radiation treatment once it is introduced.

“Being able to stay on island for comprehensive cancer treatment will enable people to go through their therapies with all the comfort and support of home,” Dr Weitekamp said. “Dr Fosker comes with excellent experience and qualifications, and we are thrilled that he will be able to support an improved cancer service in Bermuda going forward.”
