Police: Help us investigate shootings

Police are calling on witnesses to two recent firearms incidents in Pembroke to come forward.

Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Martin Weekes yesterday urged anyone with information about the incidents in the Ingham’s Vale area to assist officers with their investigation.

“On two occasions in the last week a number of shots have been fired late at night at an apartment on this residential street,” he said in a statement. “No persons have been hurt in these incidents however the persons who have committed these offences are doing so with a blatant disregard for public safety.

“We are particularly concerned that further incidents may occur where innocent people may be injured or worse by criminals seemingly intent on sending someone a message. The Bermuda Police Service currently has two persons in custody in relation to these incidents and is actively seeking to arrest two others.

“We are appealing to all right-minded citizens who may know something about these incidents to call the Serious Crime Unit on 295-0011 or the Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477 with any information that can assist with identifying the culprits and ensuring the safety of those persons going about their lawful business in this residential area.”

Pembroke West Central MP David Burt yesterday told The Royal Gazette that the repeated events are “very concerning” and “not something we as a community will tolerate”.

“I have spoken with some residents and the Bermuda Police Service Community Action Team and encourage anyone with information that can assist the police to give that information to the police.”

He added that one of the senior citizens he spoke to in the area said she was “scared to death” and didn’t want to leave her house because of the incidents.

“Violence anywhere is unacceptable and I’m confident that the Bermuda Police Service are working hard to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“As a society we have challenges and as a society we just have to work together to overcome them,” Mr Burt added.

The first of the two incidents took place at around 10.20pm on June 17, with police later stating that they were looking for two men seen in the area on a red motorcycle.

In the wake of the shooting, Shadow Public Safety Minister Walter Roban called for the public to assist police.

However less than a week later, just before 1am on Sunday morning, shots were again heard ringing out in the Ingham’s Vale area.

While no one was injured in either incident, it was forensically determined that a weapon had been discharged.
