Track star sets new record in Barbados
A young Bermuda sprinter has broken two national records in Barbados.
Suresh Black, 14, set new times in the 100 and 200 metres at the island’s National Championships this past weekend.
Running in the under-15 age category, Black ran an 11.32sec in the 100, knocking nearly five-hundredths of a second off the previous best by Josiah Atkins who ran 11.81 in 2013.
The former Somersfield Academy student followed that up by racing to victory in the 200 in 22.83m, beating Shakir Sandiford’s record of 23.27 which had stood since 2008.
Black, who now attends school in Barbados, is well known to Bermuda’s athletic officials and has been tipped to represent the Island in next year’s Carifta Games in Grenada. That is as long as Bermuda can keep Black from being poached by Barbados.
“I had spoken to someone from Barbados about him when I was at Carifta [in April],” Donna Watson, the Bermuda National Athletics Association president, said. “I made a joke to him and told him do not try to steal our athlete as he will be of age for Carifta to represent Bermuda next year.”
