Policeman convicted of incest is fired

A police officer is behind bars today after being convicted of sexual exploitation and incest.

The 37-year-old Warwick man was found guilty of four charges, including sexual exploitation a young person while in a position of trust, in Supreme Court late on Tuesday evening.

The offences took place between November 2011 and April 2014. The jury took eight hours to convict him of the charges and returned their verdicts at just after 10pm on Tuesday.

The verdicts followed a three-day trial before Puisne Judge Carlisle Greaves.

The defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was remanded into custody and will be sentenced at a later date.

Commissioner of Police Michael DeSilva, who said the officer had been discharged from the police with immediate effect, said it was “particularly disheartening” to report that the offender was a police officer with several years of service.

“The Bermuda Police Service treats offences committed against children very seriously and we recently increased the number of investigators trained to deal with those crimes,” Mr DeSilva said.

“The public has a legitimate expectation that their police service will do all it can to tackle crimes committed against children.

“He has been discharged from the police service with immediate effect.

“I am appreciative of the excellent work that was done by all involved to bring the case to court and I am particularly mindful of the courage and perseverance of the victim in this case.”
